Kyto Grit: A Multi-Sports Tracking System

Combining Versatility and Simplicity for a Smarter Workout

Kyto Grit is a revolutionary multi-sports tracking system designed by Studio Dott. that aims to simplify and enhance your workout experience. With its unique approach to fitness tracking, Kyto Grit offers a seamless integration of various sports-specific devices, all controlled by a single app.

When it comes to sport trackers, there are typically two options available: generic trackers that estimate the type of exercise you are doing, or sport-specific trackers that require separate apps and data. Kyto Grit breaks this mold by combining the best of both worlds - one app, one sensor, and multiple sports.

The inspiration for Kyto Grit came from the client, Kyto, a Chinese company with a wealth of experience in manufacturing fitness technology products. Studio Dott. was tasked with designing a smart skipping rope, but soon realized the potential for a more comprehensive system. By creating a smart central tracker that can be exchanged between different sport-specific products, Kyto Grit eliminates the need for multiple sensors and apps.

The core elements of Kyto Grit include the central tracker, the app, and the skipping rope. The central tracker, measuring 48mm x 26mm x 11mm, uses accelerometers and a magnetic hall sensor to track movement and device-specific actions, such as rotations of the rope. This data is wirelessly transmitted to the app on your smartphone via Bluetooth, providing a clear overview of your exercise data.

To ensure the feasibility of the project, Studio Dott. initially focused on developing the central tracker, the app, and the skipping rope. Once these core elements were perfected, they expanded the Grit range to include a clip for running and walking, with plans for a hand gripper in the works.

The design and production process of Kyto Grit presented several challenges. The team at Studio Dott. had to ensure that all products seamlessly worked together, with intuitive and ergonomic user interaction. Through usage analysis and rapid prototyping, they were able to refine the design and evaluate its functionality at every stage.

The Kyto Grit hardware is manufactured using injection moulding, utilizing materials such as ABS and TPE. The handles of the skipping rope are made with 2K injection moulding, providing a strong core and a soft-touch grip. The clip, designed for running and walking, features a strong hook and a flexible soft-touch case to securely hold the tracker.

To launch Kyto Grit and fund further development, an Indiegogo campaign was run in March and April 2016. The campaign was a success, allowing Kyto Grit to be introduced to the market and gain recognition for its innovative design.

Kyto Grit has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2016. This award recognizes the outstanding expertise and innovation demonstrated by the design, highlighting its technical characteristics and artistic skill.

With Kyto Grit, Studio Dott. has created a versatile and user-friendly fitness-tracking system that simplifies the way we exercise. By combining multiple sports-specific devices into one cohesive system, Kyto Grit offers a smarter and more efficient workout experience.
